| What about meals?
Some groups want to totally prepare some of their meals for philosophical reasons. Other groups want to prepare some of their own meals to try to save money. In our experience, groups who bring one or two people who are experienced in buying and cooking for large groups can prepare adequate meals a little more cheaply than we can. Many groups without experience cooking for large numbers have tried cooking their own meals the first year they came for a retreat, but from then on have had us cater. We have no preference how your group chooses to provide food, as long as they have adequate nourishment for strenuous programming.
If you choose to prepare your own meals, we have several resources available.
- Each lodge and the pavilion have a refrigerator that is reserved on a first requested basis.
- Each campsite has a fire ring with a grilling grate that sits on top of it.
- A stationary pedestal grill is in front of the pavilion and at Railtree Lodge.
- A portable grill is available.
- Iron Stake Lodge has an unfurnished kitchen (no pots, pans, utensils, dishes, etc.).
- Our pavilion has many outlets for crockpots, electric skillets, hot plates, etc.
Discovery Ministries Catering
You may contract with Discovery Ministries to cater your meals. Our catered meals are home cooked and tasty. We consistently get good feedback from groups about the quality of our food. The menus are planned to provide the calories campers need for active schedules. All of our catered meals are prepared downstairs in the Railtree Lodge kitchen and with few exceptions are eaten in the dining area there. We charge for a minimum of 10 people per meal, and can cook for a maximum of 65 (sometimes we will cook for a few more if the circumstances permit).
