Local Attraction:
Elephant Rocks State Park
Elephant Rocks is just up the road from Johnson Shut-ins. This Missouri state park consists of a large outcropping of round granite boulders just sitting on top a large granite shelf. Most of these boulders are bigger than the animal that lends the place it's name. A braille loop walking trail begins at the parking lot/picnic area. Not only are the huge rocks singularly amazing, the view from the top of the hill is worth the hike.
Bouldering is allowed on the rocks themselves but not in the quary also located in the park. You may picnic, but camping is not allowed.
Elephant Rocks is located in the Southeast Region of Missouri on Highway 21 near Graniteville. It is also near another Top 10 Attraction, Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park. While you are in the area, don't neglect to visit Taum Sauk Mountain State Park containing the highest point in Missouri.

Also near these sites is the Taum Sauk Electric Dam. This dam was created by taking the top off a mountain and hollowing it out like a bowl. A small interprative demonstration is positioned on the wall of the main office at the foot of the hill. After a drive to the parking lot at the top of the mountain, a ramp and stairs lead to the edge of the man made lake. Truly an amazing spot when empty. The bulldozers and trucks in the bottom look like toys.
